TN reports 4th highest no. of crimes against senior citizens | Chennai News - The Times of India

Chennai: Tamil Nadu treported the most murders of senior citizens in 2023 with 201, show statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Besides, 211 other deaths of elderly people were reported under various crime categories during 2023.Tamil Nadu also reported the second most number of cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder with 11 cases -- behind Uttar Pradesh, which reported 15 such killings.Overall, Tamil Nadu reported 2,104 cases of crimes against senior citizens, ranking fourth in the country -- behind Madhya Pradesh (5,738 cases), Maharashtra (5,115), and Telangana (2,150). As for offences such as theft, assault, and property disputes involving older individuals, Chennai police registered 399 cases and Hyderabad recorded 292. Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 1,361 such cases and Mumbai had 518. Safety concerns for the elderly have been repeatedly flagged by advocacy groups, who stress the need for better policing, stronger community vigilance, and improved legal safeguards.Retired police officer S Aravindan said, "the figures underline the vulnerability of elderly citizens, but they also show the seriousness with which Chennai police were pursuing cases by filing chargesheets swiftly." Social worker S Vetri Tamilan, from the Elderly Helpdesk in Guindy run by HelpAge India, said, "we are providing support to all elderly people stranded or abandoned on the road. Our volunteers admit them to nearby homes for senior citizens or provide necessary assistance."Another volunteer S Prabha, said: "We have rescued more than three dozen elderly people left abandoned at railway stations or bus termini."
