Nagpur: The city is set to script yet another chapter in urban infrastructure as MahaMetro begins work on what will soon be Maharashtra's longest balanced cantilever (CLC) bridge for Metro over a river as part of Hingna corridor under Metro Phase-2, confirmed MahaMetro officials.Spanning 271 metres and rising 16 metres above the existing road bridge, the structure will cross Vena river without any supporting piers in between. It is being built using a specialised technique that extends the bridge outward from both sides of its support. Officials say the method ensures strength and stability while keeping the river waterway completely unobstructed.The bridge's design features a central span of 120 metres, flanked by 79 metres towards Nagpur city and 72 metres towards Hingna. An additional 15 metres on either end extends beyond the current bridge boundary, allowing seamless integration with existing roads and infrastructure. Officials highlighted that the construction approach preserves the river ecosystem while leaving room for potential future expansion of the existing bridge. The CLC bridge will surpass the length of Kamptee-Uppalwadi (258m), which is under construction as of now, and the Cotton Market (231m) CLC structures.The CLC bridge is part of the 6.7-km Reach-3A Hingna stretch, which will have seven stations and is being built at a cost of 378 crore, of which 45 crore has been earmarked for the bridge. "To maintain smooth traffic during this massive project, temporary widening of the road on both approaches has been carried out, and pile load testing is already underway. The balanced cantilever technique, considered advanced even in modern bridge engineering, eliminates the need for temporary supports under the bridge. This minimises disruption for commuters, river users, and nearby residents," said ED R Arunkumar, a senior MahaMetro official.The project is being executed by M/s Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL), with the design prepared by KPIL's team Ayesa. An independent consultant, along with VNIT Nagpur, has been appointed as a proof-checker to validate the structure. Officials anticipate that the bridge will be completed within 18 months.Once operational, the bridge, spearheaded by director (projects) Rajeev Tyagi, will redefine connectivity along the Hingna corridor, providing faster, safer, and more reliable Metro travel for thousands of daily commuters. Officials clarified that while a steel bridge and piers in river were also considered, the CLC bridge was chosen as the most feasible and cost-effective option, ensuring minimum disruption to traffic and river.Meanwhile, progress on the Hingna corridor is also moving ahead in parallel. In the Reach-3A section, 120 foundations -- including pile and open foundations -- have been completed. Out of 240 piers, 73 were finished, and two out of 228 girders were cast. Overall, around 15% of the Hingna section work was accomplished, with progress in line with targeted milestones.
