Nagpur: In a heart-pounding tale of courage, a 17-year-old tribal boy from a remote village in Chhindwada, Madhya Pradesh, turned the tables on human traffickers, saving 37 bonded labourers, including his mother and nine minors, from a grim fate. On Sunday, city police rescued the labourers, registered offences against the traffickers, and ensured the safe return of the victims to their homes. The teenager, a first-year Bachelor of Social Work student, driven to labour by poverty, used his quick thinking and knowledge of the 112 emergency number to alert authorities, triggering a dramatic rescue led by CP Ravinder Singal. The group, comprising 23 women, five adult men, and nine minors (three girls and six boys), had been promised Rs400 daily each for soyabean harvesting in Saunsar, just 100km from their village in Madhya Pradesh. The group had been brought to Mansar near Ramtek, when they halted the journey, demanding to know where they were being taken but got vague answers. The labourers started objecting after they came to know the traffickers were trying to force them to go to Satara. The traffickers also demanded Rs1.5 lakh as an 'arrangement fee' and threatened to harm anyone objecting. The labourers, deceived and trapped, faced a bleak future of exploitation, but the teenager thought otherwise. When the buses stopped near Washim for morning ablutions, he seized the moment. Hiding his phone from the traffickers' watchful eyes, he dialled 112, whispering their plight: "We're being taken to Pune against our will. Help us." The Washim police responded swiftly, intercepted the buses and ordered the drivers to reroute to Nagpur. Sensing trouble, the drivers fled soon after the vehicles reached the city, leaving the labourers stranded near Nagpur railway station.Sources said the labourers had also alerted NGO Pradeepan in Madhya Pradesh. The NGO alerted CP Singal, who sent constables Anurag Bante and Priyanka Sarode to coordinate with the Sitabuldi team of senior inspector Vijay Dighe and his detection team of sub-inspector Vinod Tiwari. The city police escorted the group to Sitabuldi police station. There, officers provided food, water, and medical care, calming down the shaken victims. The women and child department team also reached Sitabuldi police station. Women and child development officer Sunil Mesre, district child protection officer Mushtak Pathan, and Childline representative Meenakshi Dhadade reached the spot for intervention. An offence was registered at Sitabuldi police station under the bonded labour and human trafficking laws against Shankar Gaikwad, Rajesh, and others involved. The rescue revealed the group's ordeal included forced advances, extortion of Rs57,000, and threats to keep them silent.Singal said, "This boy's bravery and our rapid response saved 37 lives from exploitation. Operation Shakti reflects Nagpur police's zero-tolerance stance against trafficking. We're searching for the culprits." The operation, bolstered by NGO Pradeepan's tip-off, underscored the issues of trafficking triggered by abject poverty and lack of awareness in the remote parts of the nation.
