Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday praised agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan for his contributions to green revolution, adding that India will never forget him.At Swaminathan's centenary birth anniversary celebration in Chennai, Stalin said, "Few people have lived their lives, impacting crores of people. Swaminathan is one of them. When crores of people were hungry, he undertook green revolution and eradicated hunger. For this, India will never forget him," adding, "He had farsightedness and spoke about global warming 50 years ago."Recalling 1950s and 1960s, he said, "After independence, govt was focused on building the country and in the process could not feed its people. Many died of hunger but now such a situation does not exist. Swaminathan is responsible for a hunger-free country." Later, Stalin inaugurated a two-day 'Agri Business Festival' in Chennai, where he said that after DMK assumed office, water from Mettur Dam was released at the right time for kuruvai cultivation. "The total area for kuruvai cultivation was 5.66 lakh hectares and when compared to last year, this year, it has increased by 1.28 lakh hectares," Stalin said.Recalling a letter to PM Modi urging adequate fertilizer supply to TN, Stalin said, "I have been assured action will be taken. We are working to ensure farmers and agriculture in TN do not suffer." He added, "I am proud to say three years ago, food grain productivity was 2,835 kg per hectare. Today it has increased to 2,857 kg per hectare. TN ranks first in India in crop productivity, second in maize, total oilseeds, and sugarcane and third in millets and groundnut."
