Mumbai: The city's suburban rail network, Mumbai's mainstay for millions of daily commuters, is undergoing one of its largest scheduled disruptions in recent months. Central Railway (CR) has imposed a major block from September 26 to October 10 to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades, leading to sweeping changes in both suburban and long-distance train operations. The works, according to CR, involve the installation of new foot overbridge girders at Byculla and Sion stations and the remodelling of Karjat station yard through pre-non-interlocking work. These projects are part of efforts to enhance capacity, improve safety and ensure smoother operations in the long term. To execute these upgrades, CR has rolled out a series of traffic and power blocks, some during late-night hours, inevitably causing inconvenience for passengers. Key disruptions and changes * Karjat-Panvel section: A five-hour block has been scheduled daily from 11:20 am to 4:20 pm between September 27 and 30. * Byculla station: Night block on September 28 from 12:30 am to 4:30 am, affecting both slow and fast corridors between Byculla and Parel. * Sion station: Night block on September 28 from 1:10 am to 4:10 am, impacting services between Dadar and Kurla. * Long-distance trains: * Suburban services: Several late-night and early-morning trains between Dadar, Kurla, Kalyan, CSMT and Thane have been cancelled. Some have been rescheduled to start or end at alternative stations such as Thane and Karjat. * Karjat-Khopoli Line: No services will run during the afternoon from September 27 to 29. Select CSMT-Khopoli and Khopoli-CSMT trains will operate only up to Karjat. Advisory for passengers * Commuters are advised to check revised schedules before travelling and allow additional time for their journeys. * Those travelling long distance are encouraged to confirm train status with CR's official announcements. * Local passengers should consider alternative modes of transport during peak block hours. * Passengers using Byculla, Sion, Karjat and Kurla stations should be particularly cautious of last-minute changes and night block timings. CR has indicated that further details of blocks and revised services for October 1-10 will be shared in due course. While acknowledging the inconvenience, railway officials have stressed that these temporary measures are vital to modernise infrastructure and enhance safety across Mumbai's heavily burdened suburban network.
