Hyderabad: Hyderabad: Putting an end to months of speculation, the state govt finally appointed 1994 batch IPS officer B Shivadhar Reddy in-charge director general of police (DGP) of Telangana on Friday. He will replace Jitender who is slated to retire on Sept 30.The other IPS officers in the race for the top post were CV Anand (1991 batch) and Ravi Gupta (1990) -- both Reddy's seniors.In its order dated Sept 26, the Telangana govt stated: "B Shivadhar Reddy, DGP (Intelligence) is transferred and posted as DGP (coordination) vice Jitender, retiring from service on attaining the age of superannuation. The member of service is also placed in full additional charge of the post of DGP (HOPF), until further orders".The next intelligence chief is yet to be decided.Post the formation of Telangana in 2014, Reddy took over as the first intelligence chief of the new state. He held this post when maoist-turned-gangster Mohammed Nayeemuddin, wanted by the CBI in connection with Sohrabuddin Sheikh's 'encounter' case in Gujarat, was gunned down by Telangana police in 2016. But soon afterwards, that same year, Reddy was abruptly transferred by the BRS govt and made inspector general of police (Personnel).He returned to the intelligence chief's post about seven years later, after the Congress came to power in 2023.An LLB from Osmania University, Reddy has his roots in Tool-e- Kalan village in Ranga Reddy district. After briefly practising as an advocate post his education, he cleared his Civil Service Examination in 1994. Reddy started his career as assistant superintendent of police (Anakapalli, Narsipatnam and Chintapalli sub-divisions) of Visakhapatnam district in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.Later he worked in anti-naxal commando force Greyhounds, DIG (Special Intelligence Bureau), Vizag commissioner of police, Telangana Intelligence in 2014. When he was a superintendent of police rank officer, he successfully worked in districts hit by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), when it was at its peak. After the Mecca Masjid blast, Reddy was posted as deputy commissioner of police (south zone), Hyderabad.Since 2023, all IPS officers appointed as the Head of Police Force have been posted as in-charge DGPs -- Reddy is the fourth. He is seven months away from retirement.
