New Delhi: A sedan plunged off the Mukarba Chowk flyover onto the railway tracks near Haiderpur Metro Station on Sunday, flipping over and bringing train services to a halt for nearly an hour. Police also discovered an abandoned motorcycle near the tracks, believed to have been left there the previous day. The driver of the sedan was allegedly intoxicated when he lost control of the vehicle. According to police, information about the car accident was received at Samaypur Badli Police Station on Sunday morning. "A team rushed to the spot and found the vehicle overturned on the tracks," said a senior police officer. The car, a Maruti Ciaz, was found upside down beneath the Ring Road flyover, opposite Haiderpur Metro Station. The railway track was cleared soon after the vehicle was removed. The driver, a 35-year-old bakery owner from Pratap Vihar Railway Colony in Ghaziabad, sustained minor abrasions on his body. He told police he was travelling from Peera Garhi towards Ghaziabad when he lost control near the flyover. "The car hit the pavement along the Ring Road, toppled over the boundary wall, slid down a grassy slope and landed upside down on the railway tracks," the officer said. "Medical examinations are being done to check if he was under the influence of alcohol ," he said. In a separate incident, a blue motorcycle was found abandoned near the tracks on Saturday. Police are investigating whether the bike had fallen from the flyover earlier. So far, no complaint regarding the motorcycle has been reported, and authorities are working to trace its owner. Police confirmed the sedan and motorcycle incidents were unrelated. When TOI visited the Mukarba Chowk flyover following the accident, it was observed that the sedan had toppled over from a stretch directly above the railway tracks near the HaiderpurMetroStation. The flyover is a key arterial route connecting several high-traffic destinations -- Karnal, Azadpur, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Ghaziabad, Singhu Border, Narela and Model Town. The accident site revealed serious safety lapses. The boundary wall is unusually low, making it dangerously easy for a vehicle to topple over. Despite being a key junction, the stretch lacks warning signs, speed reduction markings, crash barriers or protective netting. Chunnilal, 50, a guard stationed nearby, recalled the rescue. "When I rushed to the spot, the car had overturned on the tracks. A train was scheduled to arrive from Panipat towards Ghaziabad. Someone quickly removed his red T-shirt, and waved it, signalling the train to stop. Along with locals, we managed to pull the car off the tracks" Eyewitnesses said the driver managed to crawl out of the mangled vehicle on his own.
