Coimbatore: The district green committee and revenue officials have launched a manhunt for unidentifed miscreants who poured chemicals at the base of two trees on NSR Road in the city in an attempt to uproot them.A resident of Saibaba Colony said that chemicals were deliberately and maliciously poured at the base of the two trees near a private dental hospital. "The method employed is both cruel and highly illegal. Unknown perpetrators appear to have used an acid-like substance to poison and kill the trees. This act is not merely an offence against the environment but a blatant criminal act," the resident alleged."We have informed the district green committee and urged that an FIR be registered for the use of chemicals and the damage caused to public property. A thorough investigation is needed to apprehend the individuals involved and penalise them. Only then will such offences not occur in the future," he added. To save the trees, a group of local volunteers on Sunday used water from a tanker to clean the base of the trees and reduce the effect of the chemical.
