Nagpur: Days after TOI's report of the under-construction elevated rotary at Ashok Chowk cutting through a house's balcony, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued a clarification on X. The authority dismissed allegations of "poor planning" and assured the public of the structure's safety. The rotary is part of the Rs998 crore Indora-Dighori flyover project. TOI images and videos of the rotary beam passing through the first-floor balcony of a house at the corner of Sakkardara Road had gone viral, sparking widespread criticism, with citizens questioning how such a "bizarre" design could be allowed. NHAI clarified that the balcony itself was an illegal extension. "The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) handed over land for the project. A portion of a house (balcony) was protruding into the government land. The matter was verified by NMC," the authority stated.NHAI said it would coordinate with NMC to dismantle the illegal portion of the house. "There shall be 1.5m distance from the extreme edge of the flyover rotary beam to the building structure. The flyover was executed as per the approved design with all safety norms, and there is no design flaw," the statement read. A senior NMC official said action would be initiated as per rules.Earlier, NMC officials confirmed that the owner admitted to building the house without getting the building map approved by the civic body and was ineligible for compensation. The house is situated in Siraspeth, a notified slum of the city. Generally, residents of notified slums don't apply for building map approvals, sources said.
