Srinagar, Sept 12: Security was stepped up across Doda district on Friday as prohibitory orders remained in force for the fourth consecutive day following violent protests against the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Authorities said the situation was calm overnight, though tensions persisted in parts of the Chenab Valley. Mobile internet and Wi-Fi services remained suspended in Doda and Bhalessa towns as a precautionary measure. Deputy Inspector General of Police Shridhar Patil chaired a peace committee meeting on Wednesday, attended by about 40 citizens, and assured residents that normalcy was returning. "The situation is by and large under control. Efforts are on to restore complete peace," he said. Police said that Doda authorities emphasised the positive role played by local communities in maintaining peace so far, noting that in-depth discussions and constructive suggestions were shared to ensure lasting calm and a progressive future for the region. They appealed to citizens to uphold peace and strengthen the spirit of brotherhood to safeguard harmony in the district. On Friday, deployment was reinforced in Doda, Bhaderwah, Gandoh, and Thathri, with concertina wires installed near government offices and intensified patrolling ahead of congregational prayers. Police vehicles made announcements urging residents to remain indoors. A senior police officer told Rising Kashmir that the administration was alert to prevent any flare-up. "There has been no fresh incident since Thursday night. We are keeping a close watch on sensitive areas, and adequate forces are on the ground to ensure peace. People are cooperating with us," he said. While shops reopened in Bhaderwah, business establishments elsewhere in the district stayed shut. Authorities also ordered schools to remain closed until Sunday. Earlier, Mehraj Malik, who represents Doda and is a vocal critic of the administration, was booked under PSA this week for "provocative speeches and abusive language" on social media, allegedly aimed at disturbing peace. He has been lodged in Kathua jail. It is the first time a sitting MLA in J&K has been detained under the stringent law. Violent clashes erupted on Monday and Wednesday after protesters attempted to defy restrictions. Security personnel resorted to baton charges in several places.
