New Delhi: Amid trade war with the US, Germany believed that India can play an important role in restoring peace in Europe. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who arrived in Delhi on a two-day visit to India had a deep discussion on global challenges and expressed confidence in doubling the trade between India and Germany. Wadephul said that a free trade agreement between India and the European Union could be reached in the coming months. Without naming the US, he said, "If other countries put barriers in trade, then we should respond in similar way." Last year the bilateral trade of the two countries was around 50 billion euros. Wadephul said that Germany will put in all its efforts to double this trade, and Jaishankar also reiterated India's commitment to this goal. In terms of economic cooperation, India and Germany had a two-way trade of almost EUR50 billion last year. Jaishankar said that "Our two-way trade last year was almost 50 billion euros. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, in one of his interviews, said that he was very confident that we would be doubling our trade. Let me assure him that India fully reciprocates that sentiment. It looks forward to working with the German government." India should play a role in restoring peace in Europe: Germany On the issue of peace restoration in Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful said, "Prime Minister Modi also emphasised the need for an early peace settlement in Ukraine during his meeting with President Putin a few days ago, which has been important for us. We Europeans, together with our American and Ukrainian friends, are making every possible effort to end this war soon." He said, "I know that we do not always fully agree with our Indian friends, and that is why I spoke in favor today that India should use its relations with Russia to emphasize the need for peace restoration in Europe and I am grateful for the open discussion held here today. Peace is the basis of security, freedom and prosperity. Security is and will remain a challenge for the future. We are happy that ceasefire has been implemented in the areas around India as well..."
