Travellers on Schengen visas can add two more countries to their Europe itinerary from 2025On your next trip to Paris, make sure to add one more iconic stop to your itinerary -- Notre Dame, as the beloved cathedral reopens after five years of restoration following the devastating 2019 fire. The tragedy that nearly destroyed the iconic church in April 2019 sparked an outpouring of global emotion. Now, the cathedral -- described by historian Jacques Hillairet as "the house of the people" -- is set to open its gates on December 7, following an immense restoration effort involving a thousand skilled artisans. A series of celebratory masses, including a service dedicated to the firefighters and workers who resurrected Notre Dame, will be held over a six-month period. "This is a very big moment, eagerly awaited by the whole world," said Olivier Josse, secretary general for the cathedral, as per a National Geographic report. If I have to use just one word, it's patience -- everyone will need to show patience." The expected visitor count is overwhelming, the Nat Geo report adds. Prior to the fire, the historic cathedral attracted about 12 million visitors annually. With its reopening, this number is projected to rise to 15 million. Entry to Notre Dame has traditionally been free, but now visitors will need to reserve a time slot online in advance through a booking platform on the cathedral's official website, set to launch in early December. While tickets are required, you can still visit without one -- though expect a wait of two to three hours in line. For the first six months, only individuals will be allowed entry, not groups. Additionally, the cathedral will introduce a mobile app offering educational content in three languages, with plans to expand to six in the future. As per a recent Bloomberg report, the church is contemplating an admission fee when it reopens in December. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati has argued for a fee of five euros, claiming it would raise €75 million, which would be enough to "save all the churches in Paris and France." That too might be seen as a religious priority, especially given France's fiscal difficulties.
