Chandigarh: Haryana's governor, Ashim Kumar Ghosh, and his wife, Mitra Ghosh, have adopted five tuberculosis patients as 'Nikshay Mitras' as part of a national initiative to eliminate the disease by providing them with nutritional support.The National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) is an effort to eradicate the disease by 2025. During a Monday event at Haryana Raj Bhavan, state TB officer Dr Rajesh Raju and WHO (World Health Organisation) nominee Dr Sukhwant briefed the governor on the state's progress in its TB campaign.Governor Ghosh emphasised the importance of collective action, urging all sectors of society to support TB patients and their families. "Let us all work together to build a TB-free community," he said. The governor noted that the Community Support Programme, which the Nikshay Mitra initiative falls under, was launched by the President on Sept 9, 2022.The initiative aims to improve treatment outcomes by offering additional support for nutrition, testing, and vocational assistance during a patient's treatment. In Haryana, the programme began on Sept 17, 2022, and has already helped nearly 2,200 villages become TB-free in its first phase. "The fight against TB is a collective responsibility," Ghosh said. "With community participation and people's cooperation, we will achieve the goal of a TB-free Haryana."
