Bathinda/Ferozepur: The flood situation in Punjab is turning increasingly grim. On Tuesday morning, the release of 2.2 lakh cusecs of water from Harike headworks triggered fresh alarm for dozens of flood-prone villages in the border districts of Fazilka and Ferozepur. One of the most vulnerable points is the Kavawali bridge in Fazilka, which connects 10 villages to the district and lies close to the international border.The rising water level around the bridge has already forced residents of nearby dhanis (hamlets) to move to safer locations with their livestock. The bridge is in a dilapidated state, with its parapet wall and railing having collapsed long ago. Villagers fear that the incoming water from Harike could overflow the bridge and cause further damage. The water from Kavawali eventually reaches Muhar Jamsher village, which is even closer to the border.In Ferozepur, the temporary bundh at Gati Rajoke village collapsed due to the surge in water levels, causing distress among the local population. "During the floods in Aug 2023, water flowed through this bridge and caused damage, but no repairs have been carried out in the past two years," said villagers Kewal Singh and Mohinder Singh. "People crossing it, especially at night, are at risk of falling into the river as there is no lighting provision." An official from the public works department stated that repairs would be undertaken after the monsoon season.The damage to standing crops is also escalating. With the floods striking during a crucial agricultural window, farmers fear they will lose the entire cropping season. Even after the water recedes, there may not be enough time left to cultivate new crops. Gurdev Singh from Mahatam Nagar village in Fazilka, one of the affected areas, expressed concern over the financial strain this will cause. "The compensation process is cumbersome and rarely matches the actual losses. Many farmers may be forced to take loans to survive," he said.Beyond Fazilka and Ferozepur, villages in Dharamkot sub-division of Moga district, located near Satluj river, are also submerged. Residents of Sanghera village, situated right on the riverbank, are facing severe challenges. The villages of Kammu Khurd and Nehruana are similarly affected by the surging river. In Mansa district, a breach in a drain at Kulana village allowed floodwaters to enter paddy fields, adding to the agricultural devastation.
