Bathinda: With persistent rains lashing southern Malwa, Punjab's water-sensitive cotton crop has begun to suffer, particularly in areas where water stagnation is occurring. The damage is most pronounced in Fazilka district, where cotton cultivation spans over 60,000 hectares. Crop damage has already been assessed in more than 2,000 acres, just as the first picking was expected to begin within a fortnight.Experts warn that if water remains stagnant around cotton plants for over 72 hours, the plants begin to deteriorate. The situation is especially concerning given the reduced acreage under cotton this year -- only 1.19 lakh hectares across Punjab, marking the second lowest in decades. In 2024, the area had dipped below 1 lakh hectares for the first time, with just 99,700 hectares under cultivation.The major cotton-producing districts -- Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa -- are now under close watch. Smaller stretches in Faridkot, Barnala, Sangrur, and Moga also contribute to the state's cotton output. This season, Fazilka leads with 60,121 hectares, followed by Mansa (27,621 ha), Bathinda (17,080 ha), and Muktsar (13,240 ha).Currently, cotton plants have reached heights of up to 4 feet or more in some areas. While the first pickings were expected in early Sep, official procurement by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) begins from Oct 1.Beyond water stagnation, other symptoms of crop stress are emerging.
