New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday, August 14, said that the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood cannot be debated in isolation from its security challenges, pointing towards the Pahalgam terror attack in April as a stark reminder of "ground realities." "You also have to take into consideration the ground realities; you cannot ignore what has happened in Pahalgam," Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai said during the hearing of a plea seeking the immediate restoration of statehood. Centre Assures Statehood After Polls Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the union government, reiterated that statehood would be restored after elections, but he cautioned against "rushing the process". "There is a peculiar position of this part of our country... This particular State is not the correct State to muddy the water. I will still seek instructions.
