Bengaluru: India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a yellow alert till Aug 18 and issued a forecast of moderate-to-heavy rain over parts of south-interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru and the coastal belt. Along with widespread rain, IMD officials forecast gusty winds at a speed of 30 to 50 kmph across northern plains and parts of south Karnataka.CS Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, said a well-marked low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression over the next few days. "An upper cyclonic circulation off the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, along with the monsoon trough over central India, is expected to bring widespread rain over parts of the peninsular region for the next four to five days," Patil said. Barring sunny spells for a few hours, Bengaluru is likely to witness light-to-moderate thundershowers over the next five days along with cloudy weather, according to IMD officials.They, however, clarified that unlike very heavy rain (orange alert) in the first few months of south-west monsoon, this time's weather condition would lead to moderate showers. "With overcast skies over the next few days, along with moderate rain in multiple spells through the day, the conditions are ideal for agrarian activities and help in percolation of rainwater to the groundwater table," said an IMD scientist.
