New Delhi: A taxi driver was charred to death and another critically injured after their car allegedly caught fire following a crash in northwest Delhi in the early hours of Sunday. Police claimed they were intoxicated and speeding when the incident occurred.According to police, a PCR call was received around 2am at Narela Industrial Area police station, reporting a car accident and fire near Jhanda Chowk, close to Hulambi Khurd village. When the police team reached the spot, they found the driver's seat engulfed in flames with a man charred to death and another severely injured in the adjacent seat.Emergency responders immediately rushed the injured to a hospital in Narela. He remains in critical condition.The deceased was later identified as Vipender, 40, a resident of Puther village in Panipat, Haryana. His injured co-traveller, Jagbir, also aged 40, is from Ishrana village, Panipat. "Preliminary investigation suggests the two were travelling from Delhi to Panipat. Police believe the vehicle may have been speeding when it lost control and rammed into a cemented road barricade along the Outer Express Ring Road. The impact is believed to have triggered the fire, which quickly engulfed the vehicle's front half," a senior police officer said.Upon investigation, the officer said, "The injured man told police that they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. "Police said the two, who were cab drivers, had reportedly come to Rohini for a passenger pickup, possibly for a trip to Jaipur. However, for reasons that remain unclear, the pickup did not take place, and the men proceeded to their home district in Haryana when the crash occurred."The exact sequence of events is under verification. We are checking if the fire started due to the impact or if there was a mechanical failure that led to the incident," said the officer.Forensic teams have been called in to examine the scene, collect samples, and photograph the wreckage. An FIR is being prepared, and further investigation is underway.
