Kolkata: The city experienced another humid day with scattered morning rain and a sharp spell of evening shower, even as the maximum temperature reached 31.6°C, a degree less than Saturday's maximum. With the monsoon trough having slipped up north, rain will remain scanty and sporadic over the next few days, said the Met office. North Bengal, however, could receive heavy rain over the next 48 hours. Kolkata recorded 9.6 mm of rain following a month of heavy rain in July, which turned out to be the wettest in 10 years.Even though the city remained largely dry over the last three days, intermittent showers will continue, said the Met office. "We will continue to have localised rain. The monsoon has shifted slightly northwards, which will lead to more frequent and heavier showers across north Bengal. Kolkata and south Bengal could remain relatively dry for a few days," said Regional Meteorological Centre weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.A bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Sunday said: "The upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Bihar and neighbourhood lay over northwest Bihar and adjoining northeast Uttar Pradesh and extended up to 4.5 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. The monsoon trough at mean sea level passed through Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shamli, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, Chapra, Bankura, Canning, and thence southeastwards to the northeast Bay of Bengal. Under the presence of the above meteorological conditions and strong moisture incursion, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall activity, with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places, is very likely over north Bengal during the next two days."
