Patna: Outpatient and elective services at AIIMS-Patna were brought to a standstill on Friday as over 600 resident doctors boycotted work following a violent altercation involving Sheohar MLA Chetan Anand. Emergency services also experienced partial disruption. In response to the incident, which took place on the night of July 30, the AIIMS-Patna administration has constituted a fact-finding committee to determine the sequence of events and recommend appropriate action.The confrontation between Anand, his wife Dr Ayushi Singh, armed guards and AIIMS staff, including junior doctors and security personnel, led both sides to file complaints, alleging physical assault against one another.Doctors under the banner of the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) staged a protest on Friday wearing black attire, demanding a safe working environment. Their key demands included the deployment of adequate and permanent security personnel, installation of additional CCTV cameras, implementation of robust security protocols and a written apology from the MLA.In an official press release, the RDA warned of continued boycott if their demands were ignored. "We are committed to patient care, but we cannot and will not function under threats to our lives and dignity. Should no appropriate action be taken by the given deadline, the entire responsibility for service disruption and its consequences shall lie with the administration and authorities who failed to ensure safety and justice," the statement read.In a letter submitted to the hospital superintendent, the doctors alleged that Chetan Anand, his wife and his security personnel forcibly entered hospital premises, physically assaulted staff, threatened resident doctors with death and brandished a firearm. "A hospital guard was brutally injured after being struck with the butt of the weapon, and our resident doctors were subjected to threats, abuse and fear inside their own workplace," the letter claimed.Anand, meanwhile, alleged that he and his companions were assaulted and held captive for an extended period. He also filed a complaint against the hospital staff involved.The AIIMS-Patna administration, in a late evening statement on Friday, said, "As per the available information and witnesses' statements, the incident appears to be unwarranted. In this regard, a fact-finding committee has been constituted by the administration so that appropriate action can be taken. Further action in this regard will be taken after the fact-finding committee submits its findings to the competent authority. Various versions of the incident are under circulation, which need to be verified before further comments."The Faculty Association of AIIMS-Patna also held a general body meeting and extended solidarity with the protesting junior doctors. It demanded strict action under the Bihar Medical Service Institution and Person Protection Act, 2011, warning of serious consequences should the matter be ignored.However, the protest left patients stranded, many of whom had travelled long distances for treatment. Harishankar Thakur, who came for an eye consultation, said, "Patients like me are going back without consultation. Doctors are not there."Sunaina Devi, in her 70s, had come with her daughter to see a doctor. "I am not able to eat anything, so I came here. But I could not meet any doctor," she said.
