'Boyfriend' kills Meghalaya teen with axe in public glare | Guwahati News - Times of India

Shillong: A teenage girl from Dawa Matchakolgre, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills district, was hacked to death by her 'boyfriend' with an axe on Friday.The accused, James R Sangma, was allegedly in a relationship with the 19-year- old girl, police said.A special team of Meghalaya Police has been constituted to trace and nab the culprit, who is on the run. The team has been constituted under the command of the additional superintendent of police, Williamnagar, Anthony Ch Momin. The accused had ambushed and axed the girl in full public glare at the Samgong area in Williamnagar, headquarters of East Garo Hills district, after he had asked her to meet him there on Friday, SP Stephan Rynjah said. The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of thecrimeand has been independently monitoring the progress of the probe. In a media statement on Saturday, it said it would 'intervene, if required, to ensure the victim's family receives all necessary support and assistance'. The MSCW said it would also 'work with govt agencies to strengthen the protective and preventive mechanisms for children and women in the region'. "We are deeply disturbed by the suffering endured by the victim and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. Such egregious acts of violence are intolerable and represent a direct attack on the values of humanity and justice that our society upholds," MSCW chairperson Iamon Syiem said in the statement.

Flood situation in Arunachal improves; drinking water crisis in Itanagar

MHRC seeks report on alleged custodial torture of teen in Meghalaya

Shillong: The Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the state police to submit a detailed report on the alleged custodial torture of a 19-year-old at the Sohra police station.
