Bengaluru, July 19 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister today criticised social media giant Meta for not having a sound and reliable translation mechanism, despite Facebook's two-decade-long presence in India and its vast Kannada-speaking user base. The statement followed an erroneous English translation of a condolence message originally posted in Kannada on the official Facebook page of the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Intended to pay respects to the late Kannada cinema legend B. Saroja Devi, the post, marred by translation errors, began circulating widely among users, amid an outpouring of grief across the state. The Chief Minister clarified that the post was written only in Kannada, and no official English version was posted. However, due to Facebook's auto-translation algorithm, a faulty English translation appeared on some users' feeds by default. "Facebook's translation feature appears based on user settings, and content creators have no control over how or whether posts are auto-translated in viewer feeds," the statement noted. The original Kannada post remains visible and accessible via the "See Original" option. Following the incident, the CM's Media Advisor, KV Prabhakar, wrote to Meta raising the concern. In response, the company acknowledged the glitch, issued an apology, and assured that the issue had been resolved. The Chief Minister also pointed to earlier global instances where Meta's translation system had triggered serious misunderstandings, including in Myanmar (2018), Palestine (2017), and Malaysia (2024) -- due to inaccurate or culturally insensitive auto-translations. He called on Meta to take the matter seriously and improve its language tools. "It is unfortunate that such errors continue despite Facebook's large user base in regional-language communities like Kannada," he said. Appealing for public restraint, he urged citizens not to spread confusion or misinformation stemming from the translation error, which "did not originate from our side."
