Stop sending weapons to stop wars

Trump understands this when it comes to Ukraine, but not Gaza The war in Ukraine is getting close to 1,000 days, but for most of that time, there hasn't been much talk about ending the war. Recently, German Chancellor Scholz talked to Russian President Putin for the first time in two years and urged him to negotiate with Ukraine. Even Ukraine's President Zelenskyy said the war should end through talks next year. What's changed? Trump has made it clear that he doesn't want to keep sending weapons to Ukraine. And now, Ukraine is starting to talk more about peace. We've said before that sending weapons keeps wars going longer, but Biden doesn't seem to agree. Strange Logic: At the start, sending weapons to Ukraine in 2022 made sense. Without help, Ukraine would have been defeated and many people would have been killed. But by 2023, Ukraine had won back important cities like Kherson and Kharkiv and was in a stronger position. That's when the U.S. could have helped make a peace deal. Instead, they kept sending weapons to Ukraine but put limits on how they could be used. This gave Russia a chance to fight back and regain some control. Now, Russia is willing to risk many lives for land, and Ukraine is giving up land to protect its people. Stopping the War: The only reason the West didn't push for peace talks is that they wanted to weaken Russia. But Russia has nuclear weapons, so this wasn't a smart plan. As the war drags on, both sides feel they need to show some kind of victory, which is making peace talks more likely. Turning Off the Weapon Supply: The new openness for talks shows that even just the threat of stopping weapons can push both sides to negotiate. That means both the West and countries like China, Iran, and North Korea, by supplying weapons to both sides, are making the war last longer. Trump was right about this. The war can only end if both sides talk. The constant flow of weapons only helps weapon companies, not the cause of peace.

Benefit from Russian oil imports exaggerated; India's actual gain at just USD 2.5 bn

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) India's gains from importing discounted Russian oil are estimated to be just USD 2.5 billion per annum, significantly lower than the previously speculated range of USD 10-25 billion, a research report said on Thursday. Stopping Russian oil imports would force India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, to rely on limited alternatives, potentially driving global crude prices up to USD 100 per barrel amid rising demand and tight supply. "Benefit from Russian oil imports is way less than exaggerated media numbers," brokerage CLSA said in a report. While ...Read More >
