New Delhi, July 18 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report concerning the alleged suicide of a man following purported custodial torture at the Dwarka North Police Station in the national capital. The incident reportedly took place on July 11, a day after the victim was taken into custody for questioning in connection with a theft complaint. In a press release issued today, the Commission noted that the reported facts, if true, indicate a grave violation of the human rights of the deceased. The NHRC has issued a notice to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, directing him to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. According to the media report cited by the Commission, the deceased -- a resident of Nangli Vihar and employed as a contract worker at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University -- bore multiple injury marks on his body. He was allegedly subjected to electric shocks during interrogation, resulting in visible swelling in one ear. Following the alleged torture, the victim was taken to a hospital by his family, and subsequently referred to Indira Gandhi Hospital for further treatment. He was found dead the next morning, hanging in his room. A suicide note was recovered from the scene, according to the report, said the statement.
