Chikkamagaluru: Chikkamagaluru: To ease weekend congestion and mitigate environmental risks in the Mullayanagiri area, the district administration has imposed restrictions on vehicle movement. Vehicles will now be allowed in two slots every day.A total of 1,200 vehicles will be permitted daily in two slots. In the first slot, between 6am and 12 noon, 600 vehicles will be allowed. The same number of vehicles will be permitted in the second slot, between 1pm and 6pm, said deputy commissioner CN Meena Nagaraj. She added that vehicles must return during the one-hour break in the afternoon.For tourists heading to Mullayanagiri, parking facilities will be arranged at Seethalayyanagiri. Tourists can proceed on foot or use department-approved vehicles.In the past six months, around 2.5 lakh vehicles were recorded on the hill route. The number of vehicles was lower during March and April. Congestion due to mini buses increases during weekends, posing a problem as the hill road is very narrow.Geologists recently visited the area and reported potential landslides, indicating that heavy vehicle traffic is not advisable as it could exacerbate landslides, the officer said.Small landslides have already occurred since the onset of rain in March. In light of this, vehicle traffic will be controlled in three parts as per the district-level committee's decision. The checkpost at the Handpost is being relocated to NMDC Circle. The earlier checkpost will be converted into a police outpost. If more tourists arrive, arrangements will be made for them to visit other tourist spots via the Tarikere Road. NMDC Circle will be a well-equipped circle with all facilities, the DC said.Although road widening has already been done, due to rains, asphalting has not been possible. However, the public works department will proceed with asphalt if the weather clears for 15-20 days.To facilitate locals, necessary documents should be submitted to the tourism department to obtain passes, ensuring no issues for locals travelling this route.
