TN colleges increase course intake | Chennai News - Times of India

Chennai: Due to high demand for courses, the TN govt has allowed an increase in intake at arts and science colleges by up to 20% for the 2025-26 academic year."With more students waiting to gain admission to govt arts and science colleges, the number of seats in state-run colleges will be allowed to increase by 20% this year," higher education minister Govi Chezhiaan announced on Monday. "Aided colleges will be allowed to increase their intake by 15%, and private colleges by 10%," he added.Though it would roughly result in an increase of more than 60,000 seats in govt, govt-aided, and private arts and science courses, colleges plan to increase their intake only in courses with high demand. Colleges said this would help accommodate students in courses such as BCom, BBA, and BSc computer science and other related courses."Due to tough competition, even students with higher cut-offs were not able to join BCom and other courses. It gives us an opportunity to accommodate those students in commerce programmes. We will call the wait-listed candidates to fill the additional seats," said S Uma Gowrie, principal of Ethiraj College for Women. Some colleges also mentioned that they would increase the seats in arts courses, as science courses may need additional lab facilities to accommodate more students. In the govt arts and science colleges, nearly one lakh students have been enrolled so far against 1.26 lakh seats. "Students prefer the morning shift to the evening shift as it gives them an opportunity to work in the afternoon," a principal from a govt college said.To cater to rural students, the state govt has launched 15 new govt arts and science colleges in this academic year. These colleges have been started in rural areas including Alandur, Panruti, Kunnoor, Natham, Vikravandi, and Cheyyur. Though the state govt has started 35 new arts and science colleges in the past four years, it is yet to appoint a single faculty member. The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) issued a notification in 2023 for recruiting 4,000 assistant professors for govt arts and science colleges through a competitive exam. However, the recruitment was stalled due to a court case.
