Chennai: In view of high demand, the state govt has allowed an increase in intake in arts and science colleges it runs by up to 20% for the 2025-26 academic year. "Aided colleges will be allowed to increase their intake by 15%, and private colleges by 10%," higher education minister Govi Chezhiaan said on Monday. Though it would result in an increase of more than 60,000 seats in govt, govt-aided, and private arts and science courses, colleges plan to increase their intake only in courses with high demand. This would help accommodate students in sought-after courses. "Due to tough competition, even students with higher cut-offs were not able to join BCom and other courses. It gives us an opportunity to accommodate those students in commerce programmes, and we will call the waitlisted candidates to fill the additional seats," said S Uma Gowrie, principal of Ethiraj College for Women. Some colleges also said they would increase the seats in arts courses, as science courses may need additional lab facilities to accommodate more students. "Students prefer the morning shift to the evening shift as it gives them an opportunity to work in the afternoon," a principal from a govt college said. To cater to rural students, the state govt launched 15 new arts and science colleges in this academic year. These colleges were started in Alandur, Panruti, Kunnoor, Natham, Vikravandi, and Cheyyur. Though the state govt has opened 35 arts and science colleges in the past four years, it is yet to appoint a single faculty member. The Teachers Recruitment Board issued a notification in 2023 to recruit 4,000 assistant professors for govt arts and science colleges through a competitive exam. However, the recruitment process was stalled due to a court case.
