Bhubaneswar, July 15 (UNI) Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati today said the death of Soumyashree Bisi, a young student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, is not just a tragedy but a stark reminder of the urgent need to ensure safety and justice on educational campuses. Posting on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Governor expressed deep sorrow, stating "Shattered to learn about the untimely loss of a young student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College. Her passing is not just a tragedy, but a stark reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our campuses." Soumyashree Bisi, a 20-year-old second-year B.Ed student, succumbed to severe burn injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar late last night. She had attempted self-immolation on July 12 inside the college campus, allegedly in protest after being denied justice over her accusations of sexual and mental harassment by Assistant Professor Samira Kumar Sahu of the Department of Educational Studies. Despite the best efforts of the doctors at AIIMS, Soumyashree could not be saved as she had sustained more than 90 percent burn injuries. Offering condolences to the bereaved family, the Governor said "My heart goes out to the grieving family. May they find strength in this hour of unbearable pain. "Sadgati Praptirastu." He further assured that the law would take its strictest course and that those responsible would face uncompromising punishment. Following the incident, the Odisha Government had already suspended both the college Principal Dillip Ghosh and Assistant Professor Samira Sahu. Both have since been also arrested by police in connection with the case.
