Mumbai : "Today's unified response to the 'Bar Bandh' and 'No Alcohol' call across Maharashtra is a clear reflection of the deep distress felt by the hospitality industry over a 60 per cent hike in excise duty, alongside a 15 per cent increase in annual license fees and imposition of 10 per cent VAT on IMFL at FL3 outlets. Around 90-95 per cent of hotel bars, including those in Mumbai and major cities across the State stood in solidarity by suspending liquor service but maintained food services as usual . The peaceful protest march by the Vasai Taluka Hotel Association, Restaurant and Bar Association of Chandrapur and Navi Mumbai Hotel Owners' Association, among others, echoed the collective voice of small and mid-sized businesses. The consequences of this steep hike will be devastating for smaller FL3 bars, particularly those with fewer than 25 tables, as the cost of popular IMFL brands is expected to shoot up by nearly 50 per cent for consumers. These bars serve the lower economic segments and provide crucial employment at the grassroots level. If the State Government does not urgently rationalize the excessive hikes in excise duty, VAT, and license fees, we fear that thousands of small license holders will be forced to surrender their FL3 licenses, leading to mass closures and job losses. This is not just about alcohol; it's also about Maharashtra's standing as a tourism-friendly State.
