Gandhinagar: The state govt on Monday approved the merger of 127 Narmada settlements into gram panchayats. With this decision, the settlements -- spread across 26 talukas in eight districts -- will be integrated with adjacent villages. The govt stated that the merger process will take approximately two months.The regulations for merging and transferring these settlements -- currently under the Sardar Sarovar Punarvasvat Agency (SSPA) -- to their respective villages have been finalised. The department of panchayat, rural housing, and rural development has issued a formal notification in this regard, according to an official statement.The 127 settlements are located in the districts of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Kheda, Panchmahal, Narmada, Chhota Udepur, and Mahisagar.As per the plan, existing civic amenities in these settlements, such as drinking water sources, approach roads, internal roads, street lighting, and rainwater drainage systems; will be maintained by the respective gram panchayats.The statement also clarified that the ownership of unallocated plots within the settlements will remain with the SSPA, which will transfer all relevant records to the gram panchayats.Facilities such as schools, dispensaries, and anganwadis located in the settlements will be handed over to the respective govt departments by the SSPA. Additionally, common plots and open spaces within the settlements can now be used by gram panchayats to develop public amenities for residents.The govt added that these rules will also apply in future cases, when the remaining Narmada settlements under the SSPA are merged with their respective gram panchayats.
