Koraput: Days after a young couple in Rayagada district were tied to a yoke and made to till the land, flogged and publicly humiliated for allegedly violating tribal customs, a similar incident surfaced in Koraput on Sunday, triggering widespread criticism and outrage.In a video, which has gone viral on social media, a 21-year-old youth, Naresh Pidika, and his 20-year-old cousin, Asati Pidika, are seen tied to a yoke and being paraded through the street at Nadimeitiki village in Borgi panchayat under Narayanpatna block for several metres for marrying within the same clan, which the villagers considered a violation of tribal customs. To further "atone" for the perceived transgression, village elders conducted a "purification ritual" after the punishment. "As per our traditions, marriage or romantic ties within the same clan are strictly forbidden. It is believed that such unions bring misfortune to the village, particularly affecting agriculture. Hence, they were subjected to the symbolic punishment," a villager said.Inspector in-charge of Narayanpatna police station, Pramod Nayak, said they have taken note of the video and initiated an investigation. "A police team was sent to the village after the video was circulated. The matter is under inquiry and further details are awaited," he said. The Rayagada administration formed a four-member committee on Saturday to probe the incident in Kanjamajodi village.
