The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has blocked over 1,700 Skype IDs and 59,000 WhatsApp accounts used for digital arrests, informed the Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar in response to a Lok Sabha query by MPs Adoor Prakash, Jai Prakash, and Kuldeep Indora. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) established the I4C in 2018 to facilitate "national-level coordination" for tackling cybercrime issues and enhancing law enforcement agencies' capacity to handle them. The minister listed the following measures: Within 'digital arrests', fraudsters impersonating government officials accuse potential victims of engaging in illegal activities, thereby directing them to remain visually visible over Skype or similar video conferencing platforms. As MediaNama previously reported, victims of digital arrests often face challenges like diminished trust in officials, significant financial losses, and reduced confidence in digital platforms. In response to the surge in cases, Skype introduced real-time alerts to warn users about such impersonators posing as government and law officials. The platform introduced this feature following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's warnings about 'digital arrest' scams, urging citizens to stay vigilant. Previously, the government had also issued press releases urging victims of such cybercrime to register their complaints at helpline number 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in. It has also taken measures like blocking over 1,000 Skype IDs, deactivating 6 lakh mobile numbers and blocking various mobile apps among others.
