New Delhi: The interim report on the Air India plane crash that took place on June 12 at Ahmedabad has suggested that the Air India Dreamliner, which crashed soon after takeoff, might have suffered mechanical or power supply issues that could have led to the change in the position of the switches that feed fuel into the plane, experts said on Saturday, 12 July 2025. They said that the reasons for the change in fuel switch position will be known during further investigations. The investigation was conducted by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) whose preliminary report has mentioned that fuel switches of engine 1 and 2 of the Boeing 787-8 aircraft were cut off within a gap of one second and later turned on before the crash on June 12. On June 12, the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner began to lose thrust almost immediately after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport and ploughed into a medical college hostel, killing all but one of the 242 onboard and another 19 on ground in the deadliest aviation accident in a decade. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) submitted the preliminary report on the AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the concerned authorities. More than 250 people were killed in the crash. The first report on the Air India Flight 171 crash was shared by Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Saturday, 12 July 2025. The report includes a chilling recording from the cockpit, where one pilot suddenly realizes that fuel supply to both engines had been cut off during takeoff. He questions the other pilot, who replies that he didn't do it. This early report comes one month after the terrible crash, which killed 260 people, 241 on board and 19 on the ground. The 15-page report gives us the first clear look into what happened in the final moments of the flight. It also raises new questions about why both engines lost fuel at the same time. At one point in the cockpit voice recording, one pilot is heard saying, "Why did you cutoff?" The other responds, "I did not do so." This exchange shows that the fuel supply was turned off, but no one in the cockpit claims to have done it. Fuel switches are used to regulate fuel flow into a plane's engines. They are used by pilots to start or shut down engines on the ground or to manually shut down or restart engines if an engine failure occurs during a flight. According to aviation experts, a pilot would not be able to accidentally move the fuel switches that feed the engines. But if moved, the effect would be immediate, cutting off engine power. For this purpose there are independent power systems and wiring for the fuel cutoff switches and the fuel valves controlled by those switches, according to U.S. aviation safety expert John Cox. There are only two modes on a fuel switch, 'Cut Off' and 'Run'. The two fuel control switches on a Boeing 787, the Air India aircraft that crashed in Air India's case, was equipped with two GE engines and the fuel switches are located below the thrust levers. These switches are spring-loaded to remain in position. To change one switch from run mode to cutoff mode, a pilot has to first pull the switch up and then move it from run to cutoff or vice versa. According to the flight recorder, a few seconds after takeoff, switches for both engines transitioned to 'CUTOFF' from 'RUN' one after another with a time gap of one second. As a result, the engines began to lose power. One pilot was heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel. "The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report said. It did not identify which remarks were made by the flight's captain and which by the first officer. Seconds later, the switches flipped back to 'RUN', according to the preliminary report. Both fuel control switches were found in the 'RUN' position at the crash site, it said. When fuel control switches are moved from 'CUTOFF' to 'RUN' while the aircraft is in flight, each engine's control system automatically manages a relight and thrust recovery sequence of ignition and fuel introduction, the report said. "No sane pilot would ever turn those switches off in flight," especially as the plane is just starting to climb, U.S. aviation safety expert John Nance said.
