Couple uses S Kol man's apartment ownership records to get Aadhaar | Kolkata News - Times of India

Kolkata: A south Kolkata resident has found that a couple used his Aadhaar card, ownership records of his flat in an EM Bypass condo, without his knowledge and uploaded the documents on the govt portal as a fake address proof to obtain their own Aadhaar. The fraud came to light after the 52-year-old owner, currently living on Prince Anwar Shah Road, learnt from someone that the address of his flat at Urbana Housing Complex was used by a married couple for Aadhaar registration. He filed an RTI query with UIDAI in the first week of June. On receiving a confirmation, he lodged a complaint at the Anandapur PS. Police said the couple forged the complainant's signature to create fraudulent documents, which they uploaded on the govt portal. To the property owner's RTI query, the UIDAI authorities replied: "It is informed that address update in an Aadhaar is considered on receipt of such request with submission of a valid proof of address as specified vide the acceptable list of documents which is readily available on the official website of UIDAI i.e. uidai.gov.in." An investigating officer said the victim claimed the accused fraudulently prepared documents or NOC by forging his signature and might have submitted the said documents as genuine to obtain an Aadhaar card with a mala fide intention for their personal end. "He said he addressed a letter to the office of the ministry of electronics and information technology, UIDAI under the provision of RTI Act, 2005. The office replied the accused submitted a valid address proof to obtain an Aadhaar card," the officer said.Cops from the Anandapur Police Station have registered a case under multiple BNS sections. Their focus is on checking the authenticity of the documents submitted. The incident has prompted discussions on the need for stricter verification protocols in the Aadhaar registration process.
