COIMBATORE: Guest workers from Bihar working in Coimbatore have expressed their concern over the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in their native state being carried out by the Election Commission of India. They fear of losing their identity since they don't have the documents required by the ECI. The Representatives of the People Act stipulates that only citizens who are ordinarily resident should be included on the electoral roll of a constituency. People who have relocated from their native place for extended periods would be included on the electoral roll of their current residential constituency.Some of the guest workers TOI spoke to were unaware of the ECI's move while some others expressed the concern that they would lose their identity."As an uneducated person living in a rented house and working as a guest worker in Coimbatore, I possess only an Aadhaar card, ration card and PAN card. With all my addresses registered in Bihar, I fear having no place to belong to. Does this mean I'm no longer an Indian citizen?" said Sam Kishore, 27, who works in a private casting company here.Guest workers like Rajesh Sah said they have limited knowledge of specified documents. "I've been employed in Tamil Nadu for 15 years based solely on my Aadhaar and PAN cards," Sah said. He is employed at a private factory near Thaneerpandal Road in Coimbatore.Montu Sah,36, who has been staying in Coimbatore for two decades, said he was unaware of the electoral roll changes in Bihar. "My family requested my Aadhaar card for voter card linkage but wasn't informed about the changes in acceptable ID proofs.""The one-month timeline for electoral corrections or document procurement is unrealistic. For example, to attend the July 15 correction camp, I need to arrive in Bihar 10-15 days early. Unreserved train travel is unreliable due to cancellations and rescheduling, with the round trip taking approximately eight days. Even if I make the journey, obtaining documents within a month is impossible. Moreover, my extended absence affects my income and jeopardises my employment," he said."Do we have any alternative?" asked Manoj Kumar Sharma, 30, a Bihar native working at a salon in Gopalapuram.
