Bhubaneswar: Passengers across the state faced severe difficulties on Thursday as the drivers' association's cease-work strike entered its third day, leaving around 60% of private buses off the roads on multiple routes.Many were left stranded at Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bus Terminal (BSABT) in Baramunda, Netaji Bus Terminal in Cuttack, and other bus stands across the state as they struggled to find transport. "My father died late on Wednesday night. I am waiting for a bus to travel to Rajkanika in Kendrapada district. I don't have the money to hire a taxi or an autorickshaw to visit my village. We do not have rail connectivity either," said Muna Das, a labourer staying in Bhubaneswar.Mangalabari Mahara, an elderly woman from Sinapali in Nuapada district, was forced to return home from the hospital on foot. "I did not get a bus to return home. Without finding any other way, I walked down to my village," said the septuagenarian.Debendra Sahu, general manager of the All Odisha Private Bus Owners' Association, said more than 8,000 private buses were not plying on Thursday. "We have discussed the problems faced by common people with the govt. Agitators are asking drivers to get down from the buses and other vehicles," he added. Prashant Menduli, president of the Odisha Drivers' Association, said they will continue the agitation until their demands are met.A high-level review meeting was convened on July 9 under the chairmanship of transport minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena to assess the ground situation and develop a coordinated response to avoid any disruption to the state's supply chain network. During the meeting, the minister reiterated the govt's openness to dialogue with the representatives of the drivers' association and appealed to them to withdraw the strike in the larger interest of the public and the state's economy.
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Drivers' Association has called off its cease-work strike, which began on July 8, secretary Manas Debata announced on Sunday.
