Ahmedabad: If you or someone you know installed solar panels a decade ago hoping to cut electricity bills for the next 25 years, here is some news that might jolt you: many panels in Gujarat are starting to wear out after just 8 to 12 years, far earlier than promised.Over the last 18 months, solar companies in the state have received replacement requests for more than 50 megawatts (MW) of capacity. That is enough to power thousands of homes. And while the solar dream is still very much alive, this unexpected trend is a wake-up call, especially for early adopters.Factors such as micro-cracks, soldering defects, and maintenance issues are contributing to the need for earlier replacement. "These panels were supposed to deliver stable performance for 25 years," said Kalpesh Kalathia, head of a leading solar panel manufacturing firm. "But we are seeing generation drop to just 8% in some panels, when it should be around 15%. Cracks, wear and tear, and poor build quality are showing up much sooner than expected."Kalathia added, "Our firm alone has received enquiries for replacing 20-25MW worth of panels in Gujarat in the past year. The total demand for replacemment in Gujarat would amount to around 50MW in a year. "All these panels were installed in the early years of the solar boom, when many developers relied on imported modules. Now, their generation output has dropped sharply due to degradation and manufacturing issues."Most of these underperforming panels were set up between 2009 and 2013, back when solar installations in homes and factories were just taking off. And for many early users, these systems represented long-term savings and a move toward self-reliance in energy.So, what is going wrong? Industry insiders point to a mix of culprits: low-cost imported panels that couldn't handle India's harsh summers and monsoons, subpar site maintenance, and early panels that simply didn't generate as much power as today's models. "The root causes vary from poor quality control during imports to inadequate site maintenance. They often fail to perform under real-world Indian weather conditions," said Ankit Singhania, director and co-founder of another prominent solar module firm. "Without proper quality checks and robust maintenance protocols, these systems face accelerated performance loss. As the sector matures, there is a growing need to prioritise both long-term reliability and responsible procurement to ensure that the panels are viable for more than 25 years."Another director highlighted the impact of aggressive price competition during the solar sector's initial expansion. "Solar panels ideally have a 25-year performance warranty, but due to price wars, many manufacturers in China provided panels at very cheap rates," he said, "Not all Chinese imports are bad, but the ones that were too cheap often did not last."A senior executive at another firm added that many panels failed during cyclones, and that India's increasing extreme weather is becoming a factor affecting durability. Even users whose panels are still technically working are now eyeing replacements. Why? "Newer panels can generate more electricity from the same rooftop, helping people earn better returns and reduce bills faster."For homeowners and businesses who have gone solar, or are considering it, the message is clear: quality matters. Ask questions about warranties. Choose panels suited to Indian weather. And do not forget regular upkeep.
