Kolkata: With three days of continuous showers adding to the July tally, Kolkata's rain count by Wednesday evening reached more than one-third of the monthly mean in the first nine days itself. While the rain intensity and frequency are expected to reduce from Thursday, the Met office said the city will continue to experience a few spells daily for now, with the possibility of renewed spells from Sunday.By Wednesday evening, Kolkata received 152 mm of rain this July. Climatologically, the city should receive a monthly mean rain of 396.1 mm in July. With three more weeks left for the month to end and the possibility of renewed rain by the weekend, the Met office expects the city to achieve a normal rain count."Climatologically, July and Aug are the prime monsoon months, with July normally receiving a slightly higher rain count than Aug. The rain amount in Kolkata for July so far is satisfactory. For Bengal, the overall monsoon outlook for July is normal as well," said meteorologist HR Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.Under normal conditions, July should have a mean of 17.7 rainy days. So far, the Alipore weather office recorded rain on all nine days of the current month, though the rain count on three days was not very significant.Riding on a twin system of a low-pressure area and an associated cyclonic circulation during a span when the monsoon flow is strong in this region, Kolkata was lashed by incessant rain between Monday and Wednesday. Alipore recorded 87.5 mm of rain between Monday evening and Tuesday evening, registering the single highest day rain count this monsoon. On Wednesday, the city received 9.3 mm rain.Even as the rain intensity was less on Wednesday, a gloomy sky with frequent spells of light rain throughout the day continued to keep the mercury below the normal mark. At 27.4°C, the maximum temperature was 5.1 notches below the normal mark, while the minimum temperature -- at 24.8°C -- was also two notches less than normal.Met officials said that the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal is moving at a snail's pace, triggering the rain spell. The system is expected to cross over to Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh by Friday. "We can expect the cloud cover as well as rain intensity to reduce further by Thursday in Kolkata. But a few western and northern districts may get a few heavy spells," said Biswas.While the rain frequency will gradually decrease further till Saturday, the Met office indicated that the city sky could become gloomy from Sunday again, triggering more spells. "By Sunday, we expect the monsoon trough to come across our region. This trough, along with the normal monsoon flow, is likely to bring another span of rainy days," added Biswas.
