Pune: An off-duty fireman rescued a four-year-old girl just in time from falling off a third-floor bedroom window of an apartment building in Katraj around 9.10am on Tuesday. The girl, left alone while her mother took her sister to school, managed to slide through the window grille and was clinging to it for life, crying and struggling to get back inside.Umesh Sutar, a resident of a nearby building at Khopdenagar, Gujar Nimbalkarwadi in Katraj, saw the girl clinging to a third-floor window, crying frantically and teetering on the edge. Sutar quickly alerted firefighter Yogesh Chavan living in his building, who rushed to the scene to rescue the girl.On reaching to the girl's building, Chavan found the flat was locked from outside as the girl's mother had gone out to drop her other daughter at a nearby school. The mother returned just when Chavan reached the flat, and they hurriedly unlocked the door, with Chavan rescuing the girl from falling."The girl climbed the window while playing in the bedroom of the flat and slid out of its grille. Her head was stuck in the window grille while the rest of her body was dangling dangerously," Chavan recalled. "A man living in our building screamed from the ground, bacchi gir rahi hai (the girl is falling), but he didn't know what to do. Owing to my training in firefighting, I knew exactly what to do. So, I ran to the Sonawane building (the girl's residence) and started climbing the stairs and spotted the girl's mother. I took keys from her and ran to the bedroom after opening the locks. I pulled the girl out of the window. The girl was screaming due to pain," Chavan said."It was my weekly off. I was having a cup of tea while reading the newspaper when I heard the screams of the man from the ground. I went to my balcony and spotted the girl hanging dangerously and immediately ran out to rescue her," he added.
