New School Timings In Kashmir: AAP Legislator Gets Schooled Over Personal Comments On Education Minister

Jammu: Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Jammu and Kashmir, Mehraj Malik, has stirred a fresh controversy by questioning the qualification of Education Minister, Sakina Itoo over the new school timings in the Union Territory after summer vacation. Schools in Kashmir Division and Winter Zone Jammu reopened on Tuesday after a 15-day summer break following announcement by Education Minister Itoo the preceding day. The announcement put an end to speculations over extension in the vacation amid sweltering summer heat. While the move against extending the summer vacation in Kashmir was vindicated by moderate to heavy rainfall in the valley giving the much needed relief from prolonged heatwave, the change of school timings has been met with mixed reactions from various quarters. Schools in municipal areas have been directed to function from 7:30 am to 11:30 am and 8 am to 12 pm elsewhere. The Education Department, in the official order, further directed that online classes except classes 1st to 5th, shall be conducted from 12:30 pm to 2 pm in case of municipal areas and 1 pm to 2:30 pm in case of non-municipal areas AAP MLA Malik, who is the party's lone legislator in the UT assembly, launched a personal attack on the Education Minister by questioning her qualification in an apparent bid to oppose the new school timings. The AAP legislator represents Doda constituency to which the new school timings are applicable. In a post on his official social media handles, Malik, who holds a Masters degree from Jammu University wrote, "When 12th pass are made Education Ministers, it's no surprise that the decisions they take lack depth and vision(sic)". In a subsequent post, Malik said that "all stakeholders should have been taken into confidence before announcing such school timings". He said that it was not feasible for students to appear both offline and online classes a couple of hours apart. "In our district, which is far-flung, it takes students 2 to 3 hours to reach home. How are they expected to travel back during peak heat hours around 12 to 1 PM and join classes? Also show us the schools in distt Doda where online class equipment is available. They don't even have desks to sit on, rooms are without windows and you are expecting online classes. Moreover, in areas like Ramban and Banihal, people aren't even allowed to step out of their homes due to the ongoing Yatra restrictions," Malik said in a bid to defend his post against Itoo. But this did not stop the backlash against the AAP legislator with netizens questioning the personal comments aimed at the education minister. "I didn't expect this irresponsible post from you. I had a lot of respect and regards for you being a young and energetic vibrant leader. I was hopeful you will come in support of this move. This is not politics. This is for the future of our children. Making and manipulating every situation like a bone and feed for political stuff, fame and gains doesn't serve the public or society in any way. Please at least spare this education and future of children from politics," a netizen wrote. "I won't comment on the minister's qualification, but the decision to end the vacation extension is genuinely appreciable. It's important we train our children according to the present climate realities. Waking up early is not out of place in today's world," another netizen wrote. Reacting to MLA Doda's comments, NC leader and DDC Member from Gundna Doda, Syed Asim Hashmi told ETV Bharat that Malik was "behaving like a non-serious person who himself lacks the basic fundamental understanding of political science". "Just calling someone 12th pass means that he is lacking the basic essence and the understanding. He may have differences but should have talked to the concerned minister to sort out those differences instead of resorting to social media for theatrics, which he is best at." As for Education Minister Sakina Itoo, she had to leave her MBBS studies following her father and a National Conference leader Wali Muhammad Itoo's killing in a mosque in Talab Khatinkan area of Jammu by unknown gunmen on March 18, 1994. Itoo followed in the footsteps of her father and joined NC after leaving studies. AAP MLA Mehraj Malik, who initially supported the Omar Abdullah led government in Jammu Kashmir, has been a vocal critic of the National Conference government on various issues. Malik is not new to controversies. In May this year, the lone AAP legislator in Jammu Kashmir had threatened doctors and paramedics at GMC Doda of dire consequences, whom he called "mafia". In protest against the legislator's threats, the doctors and paramedics had held an indefinite strike at the medical college. One female doctor had even lodged a complaint against the AAP MLA. Before the medic's complaint, the AAP leader has at least six cases registered against him for various offences. But he has not been convicted in any of them. Malik did not reply to repeated calls and messages from ETV Bharat over the matter.
