Puri, July 6 (UNI) An unprecedented crowd of over two million devotees converged on the sacred city of Puri today to witness the spectacular Suna Vesha (golden attire) of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra atop their respective chariots stationed near the Simhadwar of the Sri Jagannath Temple. The three-kilometre-long Grand Road, the venue of the Rath Yatra, was virtually transformed into a flowing sea of humanity, with two massive streams of devotees -- one moving towards the chariots and the other returning after offering their darshan during the golden adornment ritual. The Suna Vesha, held after the ceremonial Pahandi Bije, is considered one of the most awe-inspiring events of the nine-day-long annual Rath Yatra. The ritual dressing of the deities in golden ornaments began at 4 PM and was completed by 5 PM, the deities were fully adorned and presented for public viewing. The influx of devotees has continued unabated since yesterday , swelling by the hour. Devotees were seen moving in long queues within barricaded paths along the Badadanda, circumambulating the three chariots, witnessing the divine spectacle, and returning in a steady stream. The crowd continued to grow with each passing hour. As per tradition, the Mekap servitors (temple treasurers), under tight security, brought three sets of precious ornaments from the temporary strong room and handed them over to the dressers on each chariot. The deities were adorned with massive gold ornaments, including decorative limbs (hands and feet), insignia like mace, lotus, conch, chakra, golden plough, and celestial symbols such as the sun and moon. Large gold tiaras, a variety of ornate necklaces, and giant "kundalas" (earrings) further enhanced the splendour of the deities. Golden chest guards (Hrudapadak) added to the magnificent look. A multi-layer security cover was deployed around the chariots throughout the ceremony. The Suna Vesha will be concluded after 11 PM tonight, after which the ornaments will be securely returned to the strong room. Of the five annual Suna Veshas, four are held inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, while this one is uniquely observed on the chariots outside, making it accessible to all devotees. Earlier in the day, daily rituals such as Mangala Arati, Tadapa Lagi, Mailum, Abakash, Surya Puja, Rosa Homa, and Gopal Bhog were performed. This was followed by the Madhyahna Dhupa at 1:50 PM. The deities were then dressed in sacred cloth known as Khandua before the golden attire was adorned. According to the 1978 inventory, the temple possesses 367 gold ornaments weighing over four quintals and 251 silver ornaments weighing 14 quintals. Many are encrusted with rare diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and other precious stones of exquisite quality. Tomorrow night, the rare offering of Adhar Pana, a sacred drink, will be presented to the deities on the chariots. On Tuesday, the homecoming ritual known as Niladri Bije will be observed, marked by the symbolic offering of Rasagolla Bhog to Goddess Lakshmi. Meanwhile, all permanent and temporary parking lots in and around Puri were reported to be full by morning. With thousands of vehicles arriving, many were forced to park along roadsides. Senior officials, including DGP Y.B. Khurania, Puri Collector Chanchal Rana, SP Pinak Mishra, and SJTA Chief Administrator Dr. Arabind Padhee, personally supervised the arrangements to ensure a smooth and safe conduct of the event.
