New Delhi: A fire broke out in a Vishal Mega Mart store in central Delhi's Karol Bagh on Friday evening. Most people who were inside the building were evacuated. One person is feared to be missing, police said.Delhi Fire Services said the fire was reported around 6.44pm."Immediately, 15 fire tenders were dispatched with over 90 firefighters," a DFS official said."The building has a basement and four floors above it. Preliminary information suggests that the fire began on the second floor and spread to other parts of the building," a senior fire official said. The official attributed the challenges of putting out the blaze to the building's lack of adequate ventilation. "We managed to douse the fire that was visible outside, but due to the absence of adequate ventilation, the fire persisted on the upper floors," the officer said. "To combat this, we used a hydraulic lift to access the upper floors.""To create a ventilation system and allow smoke and heat to escape, the firefighters are trying to break a wall on the third floor. This is where we are facing some challenges and delays," he added.Murli Mani, president of the Ajmal Khan Road Vyapar Mandal, said the fire broke out due to a short circuit at approximately 6.30pm on the second floor of the store, which is part of a chain that sells groceries to apparel.He said the flames quickly grew, and in a matter of minutes, spread to the upper levels. Several customers and staff were reportedly inside. Authorities said that all visible occupants were evacuated. DCP (central) Nidhin Valsan said: "The building is four-storeyed.
