Nagpur: A devastating accident on Samruddhi expressway in the stretch running through Washim district, snuffed out four members of the prominent Jaiswal family of Umred, 55km off Nagpur. The tragedy occurred late Thursday near channel number 215, between Wanoja and Karanja villages, when the family was returning to Nagpur from Pune by car. Radheshyam Jaiswal, 67, a stalwart in Umred's trading community, his sisters-in-law Madhuri Jaiswal, 52, and Sangeeta Jaiswal, 55, and his granddaughter Vaidehi Jaiswal, 25, a promising techie recently hired by a Pune firm, died in the crash.The ill-fated Ertiga car, driven by Chetan Helge, 25, the lone survivor, collided with a divider before veering off the highway and crashing into the metal railings of the roadside barrier, leaving the vehicle mangled and its passengers trapped. Highway safety patrol personnel worked tirelessly, cutting through iron and steel wreckage to extricate the victims who were rushed to medical facilities in Washim city. Sangeeta and Radheshyam were declared dead after hospitalisation, while Vaidehi and her mother Madhuri succumbed to injuries on the highway.Sources stated Radheshyam's wife too was supposed to return, but decided to stay back overnight and planned to return the following day by train. Chetan, who suffered severe injuries, is currently recuperating at a local hospital. Radheshyam and his family owned a grocery business and were well-connected in Umred.Washim superintendent of police, Anuj Tare, said preliminary investigations suggest a combination of rain, speed, and possible driver fatigue contributed to loss of control on the drenched expressway. "The driver is likely to have suffered exhaustion and slippery road conditions may have reduced tyre grip after braking," Tare said. The Mangrulpir police are conducting a thorough investigation, and legal action will be initiated against the driver.The Jaiswal family's vehicle, identifiable by a sticker of the Shivasneha organisation, was spotted by a passerby who alerted the Umred community. Kshitij Khanorkar, representing Shivasneha, expressed the town's collective shock -- "The Jaiswal family was well-respected, and the loss is unimaginable. The sight of their mangled car shook us." Radheshyam Jaiswal was returning from his eldest son's daughter's naming ceremony in Pune. His wife, who stayed back an additional night, is now grappling with loss.The tight-knit Umred community is rallying support for the grieving family, with local businesses and residents offering condolences and assistance. Scores of relatives and acquaintances thronged the funeral of the Jaiswal family on Friday evening.
