Kolkata: The role of the law college administration in allowing Monojit Mishra to handle student affairs or to operate with a free hand despite repeated complaints against him has come under the scanner of Calcutta University. The notice on the college website that asked students to contact Mishra's mobile number for any student-related affairs has raised questions about the real intent of the college administration in directing all student-related queries to him.Mishra, the key accused in the gang-rape case and popularly known as 'Mango', was assigned to look after student affairs even after his past records as a student were known. The college issued a notice on Aug 13 last year after Mishra was appointed as a casual staffer, stating: "Students of all semesters are hereby informed that for any query related to student dealings of the college, contact Mishra." Another staffer's name and number were given, but Mango played a key role. The notice was issued barely a month after Mishra was appointed as a casual staffer who didn't have specific work but had access everywhere, even to confidential matters. Several students on the campus stated that Mishra had full access to the student database, including their addresses and contact numbers.A third-year student said, "I faced an issue over a scholarship due to some minor problem in my previous marksheet. As per the notice given by the college, I sent a message to Mango-da to solve this issue. He asked me how I was, and when I asked him the same question, he replied, 'I love you'. I immediately stopped the conversation and left the chat. Later, I went to the office and solved my issue on my own. The question is why the college authority allowed such a person to deal with students who had past incidents."His colleagues stated that Team MM was the privileged section who got favours whether the matter was related to form fill-up or other official matters; they didn't need to stand in long queues.A first-year student stated that last year, he saw Mishra playing an active role in working for students' benefits, which increased his popularity and acceptability, especially among students.A third-year student said: "Mango-da was like SRK on our campus. From students to teachers, all knew that Mango had solutions to any problem, and he presented himself as the highest authority on campus who could influence the vice-principal, too. When everybody knew about his activities, why was he given free rein to do anything he wanted?"TOI tried to get a reaction from vice-principal Nayna Chatterjee but she did not receive the call.
