Kolkata Gangrape: The notoriety of thirty-one-year-old Manojit Mishra, the prime accused held in connection with the recent gang-rape at a law college in Kolkata, was such that after he re-joined the South Calcutta Law College in mid-2024 as an ad-hoc staff, the female students started feeling unsafe, started skipping classes and the attendance among girl students dropped sharply. Mishra, a former student and current Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), along will three other accused, has been held in connection with the gang-rape of a 24-year-old female student in the campus. As per the report by Times of India, several female students said that the college ambience changed dramatically after Monojit, aka Mango, returned to the campus after his ouster in 2021. Some students said that Mishra had long exhibited psychopathic tendencies and a penchant for sexual violence. The female students told the news outlet that Manojit's presence and gaze used to made them squirm, that they used to feel too uncomfortable and unsafe to be on the same campus as him. "Manojit would often click girls' photos, post them on groups, and propose to every other girl," a fourth-year student told TOI. Echoing similar sentiments, a second-year student shared her ordeal saying that she used to get intimidated by Manjoit's presence in the college. "After Monojit came back to the campus, the college environment changed so drastically, and for the worse, that we did not feel like attending classes. Till mid-2024, I would attend more or less all classes. But I stopped going to college altogether as Manojit's presence intimidated me. Similar was the situation for many other girls. I started focusing on internships," she told the news outlet. According to a college insider, Mishra used to morph pictures of girls and circulate them among his friends. "He filmed private moments with women and showed it to his friends. He had a tendency to record videos of almost everything. He and his aides used to click photographs of women and post them in groups, body shaming them and maligning them," he said. Mishra retained access to campus buildings, manipulated college WhatsApp groups, and controlled information flow, several students said." There were multiple complaints of molestation, harassment, physical assault, and extortion lodged against him. This person and his aides were a terror, especially for girls. Authorities knew everything but protected him. We even filed a formal sexual harassment complaint to the teacher-in-charge, but nothing happened," a third-year college student told the news outlet. Not only girls, even boys on the campus claimed that they were bullied and harassed by the TMC functionary. As per the report, had first taken admission to the law college in 2012 but was expelled the next year for his criminal activities. He then took admission again in 2017. That very year, he had ransacked the campus, following which he was again barred from the campus for a while. Subsequently, he passed out in 2022. Even after passing out of the institute, he reportedly maintained considerable influence on campus. After graduation, he began practising at Alipore Law College. During his student years, Mishra was known for his strong-arm tactics and had been linked to multiple incidents of assault. Reportedly, Mishra is not facing the criminal charges for the first time. According to the details, Mishra, in April this year, faced arrest for thrashing a cop. He was later granted bail. The incident had unfolded after Manojit had a scuffle with a guard deployed at an ATM. As the guard called up the police, Mishra manhandled the PCR officer, it was known. In September last year, Manojit attempted to kill a student and has not been attending college since the incident came to light. The list of other cases against the prime accused in the Kolkata law college gangrape case suggests that he has been a repeat offender. In 2017, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Mishra was assaulting and threatening a person. In July 2019, a complaint was lodged against him at the Gariahat Police Station in Kolkata, accusing him of tearing off a female student's clothes at the South Kolkata Law College. On December 31, 2019, Mishra, after attending a party at a friend's house, had allegedly stolen a music system and some expensive items. A complaint in this regard against him was lodged at the Haridevpur Police Station. In 2022, a woman from Kolkata's Swinhoe Street had filed a molestation complaint against Manojit Mishra at the Kasba Police Station. In 2024, he was accused of assaulting a college guard and was also accused of vandalism on the college campus, according to a police complaint. In 2025, another complaint against him mentioned that he had thrashed a cop. Manojit Mishra and his two associates, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, have been remanded in seven days of police custody, until July 8. Security guard Pinaki Banerjee has been remanded in police custody for three days, until July 4. In her complaint lodged on June 26, the victim said she had gone to the college to fill a form for a test and was forced to stay back in the union room even after it was completed. "Then one of the three accused proposed her to marry but she refused telling them she was already in a relationship," the police officer said as reported by the news agency. Subsequently, Mishra allegedly ordered the campus gate to be locked. In the evening, he expressed romantic interest and made unwanted advances, which she rejected. She alleged that he then forced himself on her. "I denied and fought back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not listen," she told the police. Mishra allegedly threatened to harm her boyfriend and falsely implicate her parents in criminal cases before confining her within the college premises. She alleged in her complaint that he hit her with a hockey stick. During the incident, she experienced breathing difficulties and asked for an inhaler. After using it, she was taken to the security guard's room on the ground floor, next to the students' union office, where the assault allegedly continued.
