Bengaluru: In a chilling reminder of the dangers of chasing moving vehicles, a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured after being hit by a BMTC bus while running across the road to catch his college vehicle. The PU student at a private institute and resident of Nisarga Layout, who collapsed on the road, has been hospitalised. The accident occurred on Harapanahalli Main Road near Jigani, on the outskirts of the city, Wednesday morning. Footage of the accident captured in a nearby CCTV camera went viral, evoking discussions on the importance of being in time and adhering to basic rules while crossing busy roads. It is common for students to gather at the particular spot and cross the road when they see their bus coming. "The same happened on Wednesday too. A group of students safely crossed the road and boarded the yellow bus, which had halted briefly at 6.42am. Among them was a girl whose father had dropped her off on a scooter. He crossed the road with her and paused in front of the bus as she got in... The boy, just steps behind, is seen parking his bicycle. By the time he locks the bicycle, the college bus starts moving forward. CCTV footage shows the boy frantically waving at the driver and sprinting toward the moving bus," a police officer said. As the boy dashed across the road, he collided with the left side of a blue BMTC moving in the opposite direction. "Had he been a few seconds earlier, he would have got hit by the front portion of the bus, and that would have been catastrophic," the officer added. The boy fell on the road, right next to the passing rear wheel of the bus. The man who had dropped off his daughter saw the horrifying moment unfold. He quickly parked his scooter and rushed to the boy's aid, joined by the BMTC bus crew. Together, they rushed him to hospital.Police said the boy was out of danger. However, no official complaint was filed. "We are giving the family time to decide," a senior officer stated, adding that the CCTV footage suggests the bus was moving fast and the driver might not have seen the boy running until it was too late. Even the college bus driver was oblivious to the boy's screams to halt the bus.
