New Delhi: Mukesh, the 24-year-old employed at the Sewani garment shop, led a life shrouded in mystery. Despite working at the family's garment shop in Lajpat Nagar for three years, little was known about his personal life, family or background.To his employers, he seemed like a quiet, unassuming young man who mostly kept to himself. But behind the mask hid a calculating individual capable of brutal violence, said his colleagues at the garment shop.Surender Singh Bisht, who has worked at the shop for decades, described Mukesh as someone who "rarely interacted" with others. Another staff member, Prem Sagar, said Mukesh would sometimes get irritated when asked to carry out certain tasks.Mukesh's life outside of work was an enigma, a closely guarded secret, known only to a few. His father worked as a driver and his brothers were employed in various capacities. He claimed he was getting engaged and planned to get married in Nov but, according to his colleagues, this may have been a ruse to gain sympathy and some time off.Mukesh's past employment history revealed a pattern of unreliability. Ketan, a relative of the Sewani family, previously hired him but let him go due to his frequent unapproved absences. Despite this, Kuldeep Sewani gave Mukesh another chance, the latter's reserved demeanour betraying no sign of any dangerous behaviour. Despite treating Mukesh like a family member, the Sewanis' trust was betrayed in the most horrific manner.Mukesh worked in the godown in the building that also housed the Sewani residence, giving him easy access to the premises. Ketan said Mukesh had taken an advance from Kuldeep's wife Ruchika, claiming he urgently needed the money. She had also provided him with two mobile phones for work purposes, he added.According to Prem Sagar, "Last month, Mukesh went to his hometown in Bihar, saying he was getting engaged and would return in three-four days. But he came back after 27 days."After returning, he worked for a few days and then claimed to be unwell, saying he couldn't come to work, said Sagar. "On the day of the murder, I, along with another employee, visited his rented accommodation and made him speak to Ruchika over a video call," Sagar recalled. "She asked him about the advance and gently reminded him to either return to work or repay the money. She didn't scold him, just wanted clarity."
