Kolkata: After normal June rain, the city is set to receive a normal amount of rain in July as well. According to the Met office's monthly rain outlook for July, south Bengal, including Kolkata, is likely to experience normal or near-normal rainfall, while the forecast for north Bengal indicates a deficit. The Met office has also predicted some rain every day in the city for now, which will keep the mercury in check.Despite the late arrival, Kolkata received a total rainfall of 241.5 mm in June, which is slightly less than the mean monthly June rainfall of 276.7 mm. However, a deviation of 15% is considered normal. Riding on a low-pressure area, the monsoon set over Kolkata and the rest of south Bengal on June 17. The month saw two more low-pressure systems over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal states, leading to widespread rain across Bengal with heavy rain in some districts. The monthly rainfall of 241.5 mm was the highest June rainfall in the past four years.The city should receive rain on 12.6 days in June. However, the city experienced 19 rainy days during the month. Despite no heavy rain, the frequent showers with some intense spells ensured the mercury remained above the normal mark on most days. While the mean maximum temperature for Kolkata in June should be 34.1 degrees, it was 32.6° this June. The mean minimum, too, at 27°, was slightly lower than the normal of 27.1°."We expect July rain also to be normal to near normal in south Bengal, while there could be a bit of a shortfall in north Bengal," said meteorologist HR Biswas, head of weather forecast section at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. In June, north Bengal had a deficit of 23%, while south Bengal had a surplus of 4%. "While there is no system like a low-pressure to bring heavy rain in the city, we can expect one or two spells of rain," he added.
Chennai Rain: A low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has developed into a deep depression, according to latest report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
