Pune: State govt had ordered an inquiry into the delay in issuing a work order for a new bridge over the Indrayani river at Kund Mala in Pune district despite funds being approved 11 months ago, public works department minister Shivendraraje Bhosale told both houses of the legislature on Tuesday.Bhosale said that a three-member committee led by a secretary-rank officer would submit the inquiry report within two weeks, and based on that, govt would act against the officials found responsible for the delay.State in July last year approved Rs8 crore for the construction of the new bridge, parallel to the existing iron bridge, but the work order was issued on June 10, 2025. Five days later, the 30-year-old bridge collapsed, killing four people and injuring more than 50. The district administration had installed banners to declare the bridge at Kund Mala, a tourist destination in Maval taluka, unsafe for commute and prohibit the entry of visitors, but nearly 125 people were present on it when the incident occurred on June 15.Bhosale said several reasons, including the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the assembly elections and the demand from local representatives to make footpaths on both sides of the proposed bridge, also contributed to the delay. "There was a delay, and we accept it; hence, action will be taken against those responsible." The issue was discussed in the assembly and council after the legislators, including those from ruling parties, demanded that an FIR first be registered under sections for culpable homicide. Later, govt may add names based on the inquiry report, the legislators said.The minister, however, said, "The inquiry report will come in two weeks, and the strictest possible action will be immediately initiated against those found responsible for the delay. But it would be wrong to take action before receiving the report." Though the old bridge was constructed by the PWD, it was under the maintenance of the Pune district administration when it collapsed, Bhosale said.Last month, state BJP president Ravindra Chavan, who was the PWD minister in 2024 when the Eknath Shinde-led govt approved funds for the bridge, said that there was a need for an inquiry to investigate reasons for the delay in work order. Chavan said that the tendering process was completed much before the assembly elections were announced and the project was supposed to be completed within a year.
