A major portion of George Road in Thoothukudi has become a nightmare for drivers due to the presence of large potholes. This key stretch which has not undergone any restoration for several years has become a significant source of hardship for daily commuters. The road, which comes under the State Highways department, serves as one of the major connections between the Bypass and Beach Road. Bala, an autorickshaw driver, who has been driving on this stretch for over 15 years says, "The road has been in this poor condition for years as it is not frequently used by higher authorities." He added that only occasional patchworks are done, which washes away even after a light rain. "Recently a patch work was carried out before the church festival, but it barely lasted a month," he adds. Residents also raised concerns about dust pollution caused by damaged roads as businesses along this stretch including butcher shops and textile shops are struggling as goods get covered by dust. Elgin, another resident, expressed his frustration over the worsening situation during the rains. He said "It becomes impossible to distinguish between the potholes and the rest of the road, making it extremely dangerous to drive." Speaking on the issue an official from the State Highways department stated that complete restoration work would begin after the monsoon season. He added that temporary patchworks will be carried out to mitigate the risks. Published - November 28, 2024 08:15 pm IST Read Comments
